Men Recovering: 4 Primary program components

Psychoeducation:

Over the course of the 8-week program, participants will receive psychoeducation on the biology of addiction and the biology of safety. This not only serves as a powerful tool for overcoming shame but also offers a deeper and more compassionate understanding of what occurs in the nervous system during moments of stress and dysregulation.

The purpose of sharing this information is to offer a framework for understanding the importance and necessity of self-regulation tools as an intervention. Additionally, it aims to help participants grasp why building nervous system capacity is crucial in enabling them to choose alternative responses, behaviors, and safety strategies beyond addiction.

Accessible Self-Regulation Tools:

We are pleased to share that 90% of all the self-regulation tools used in a therapeutic or coaching setting within the Men Recovering program can also be applied as self-help interventions by participants. Each tool includes 3 steps or less, and once learned, costs nothing to utilize outside of these sessions.

The aim of sharing these tools and techniques is to empower participants to apply them independently outside of one-on-one and group sessions during moments of stress, dysregulation, intense cravings, withdrawal symptoms, or recurrence(s).

Coaching & Mentorship:

Men Recovering participants will receive weekly one-on-one support from both a Psychosomatic Practitioner/Recovery Coach and a Recovery Mentor. This level of support enhances the focus on recovery while helping individuals build the internal and external resources needed to establish and maintain a strong recovery path.

You can learn more about the program team and advisory team on the Team page.

Group & Peer Support:

Men Recovering focuses on both the individual recovery journey as well, leverages the benefits of a supportive recovery group.

"Across many types of support groups, there is strong, scientifically rigorous evidence base for the effectiveness of support groups in providing positive improvements to wellbeing and the recovery of participants." -  Worrall H, Schweizer R, Marks E, Yuan L, Lloyd C, Ramjan R. (2018)

Participants will be invited to weekly group sessions led by the Men Recovering program team, along with additional facilitators, practitioners, and speakers. These sessions will offer opportunities for learning and sharing, as well as for laughter, growth, self-compassion, self-reflection, and connection.

Recovery is a personal journey, but it's not one you have to walk alone. We want to support you.

Men Recovering: Strength based & Person-centred approach

At Men Recovering, we recognize that a 'one size fits all' approach doesn't work when supporting individual participants, even within a group program. We understand that each group experience varies, and is shaped by the unique personalities, strengths, abilities, talents, and level of recovery capital each participant brings. We see this diversity as a valuable asset to the program.

Our approach:

- Treat everyone like they are the primary resource in their recovery, because they are.

- Adapt the program as best we can to serve each individual and their needs/wants.

- Leverage the strengths, skills, and abilities of each participant.

- Build upon the recovery capital each participant already has.

- Infuse fun, laughter, and humour when and where appropriate throughout all aspects of the program.

- We are identify-affirming (gender-affirming, neuro-affirming, and culture-affirming) and take great care in understanding the many factors that impact one's recovery journey.

The program team will be the guides of the Men Recovering program, with each participant taking the lead in their journey and full responsibility for their recovery.

We have invested interest in seeing all men in the communities we live and work, happy and healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at team@menrecovering.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A Recovery Coach is someone dedicated to supporting individuals along the recovery path by helping to identify barriers and obstacles, and serving as a personal guide for those seeking or maintaining recovery. These individuals also encourage self-efficacy and self-advocacy, and ultimately are walking alongside recoveree's as they carve out their individual path.

A Recovery Mentor is someone who has lived experience with addiction and has walked the recovery path themselves. These individuals are NOT sponsors, nor are  they direct peer-to-peer supports. Recovery Mentors help individuals navigate their own recovery journey by supporting recoveree's uncover what their own individual  path looks like. Much like a Recovery Coach, Recovery Mentors leverage their connections in the community when necessary and appropriate for the benefit of the recoveree and what their needs might be.

Currently, the Men Recovering program is slotted to run four times a year. Registration for the first 8-week program opens September 1st, 2024.

Program Schedule:

October - November, 2024

January - February, 2025

April - May, 2025

July - August, 2025

Men Recovering realizes individuals will be entering the program at different stages and phases of recovery. Individuals who may need more support after the 8 week program concludes will have options to continue to work with members of the program team if that is what they want. Program participants may also be referred to other professionals or programs/services if that is what is best for the individual, and if they so choose.

It is unlikely this program will be covered by your insurance as this is a private program and not one offered by any of the provincial health care services. Questions or concerns regarding health insurance coverage, cost, or payments can all be made by reaching our directly to Men Recovering below.
